Signature
For most of my career I signed my art Mitch. This worked in the corporate environment, but wasn't enough identification for the larger market. I used bill mitchell for a while, but there are just too many of us, so now I'm signing wm mitchell.
My career started with freelance art while still in high school, which led to a full tuition scholarship at the University of Northern Colorado, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and Art Education Certification. After working briefly as a layout man at BBDO Advertising on Madison Avenue , NYC, I returned to Colorado and taught art for six years at St.Mary’s Academy. During that time I also sold acrylic paintings and illustrated two books: Answers are Timid and Elfbert: Santa’s Reluctant Helper. Later, I completed a Master of Arts degree in Illustration from Syracuse University.
Since 1980, Littleton, Colorado has been my home, where Lockheed Martin Space Systems employed me as a staff artist for thirty years. Working in traditional and digital media I produced art, ranging from the cosmic to the comic – from award winning concept illustrations of space exploration to a cartoon strip, Rocket Ranch, for the Astronautics News. My space art has been included in TIME, Aviation Week & Space Technology, PBS News Hour, and on NASA web pages. Fifty commemorative posters, which I created for International Launch Services, have been distributed by the thousands around the world. I am a member of the national Society of Illustrators and participated in four exhibitions at the Museum of American Illustration.
